zoom Fifteen crewmembers of the tanker Qaaswa, which was stranded off the coast of Tunisia since early May, have been sent home with most of their owed wages, according to International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).Paul Falzon, ITF contact in Malta, has been helping the crew, which consisted of 13 Indian and two Pakistani seafarers, since May 13 after hearing from Malta that there was a ship outside its national waters whose crew felt threatened by the company.ITF said that, at that time, the company Alco Shipping Services, had not paid the crew’s wages for more than four months and had failed to carry out repairs on the vessel. After passing by Malta, the vessel was kept 100 miles out at sea, and was then ordered to anchor just off the coast of SfaxI. IFT informed that Alco left the vessel without fresh water and provisions for long periods of time and “was trying to force the crew to sail the unfit vessel to Egypt.”“The story isn’t over yet, however. We’re still pursuing one May salary and all the crew’s salaries for June – and will keep on until the men are paid what they are owed in full,” Mohamed Arrachedi, ITF inspector, said.Arrachedi added that the ITF is also defending the crews of another two of Alco Shipping Services’ vessels which are abandoned. The company’s ship Sharjah Moon is currently docked in Hamriyah Port, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, while the second ship, Ocean Pride, is at anchorage off the UAE coast.

MONTREAL – The founder of DavidsTea Inc. is being sued by company shareholders seeking to have Herschel Segal removed as executive chairman and the election of a new board of directors.Three Highland Limited partnerships which together own 12.8 per cent of the Montreal-based beverage retailer’s shares filed suit in Quebec Superior Court against Segal and his investment firm Rainy Day Investments.Rainy Day Investments owns 46.4 per cent of DavidsTea shares.DavidsTea says the lawsuit is without merit and contains old, baseless allegations.Segal says in a statement that DavidsTea won’t be distracted by efforts to turn around the struggling retailer. The company, which is not named as a defendant, says it will defend against efforts that affect the election of directors or appointment of management. It says the new lawsuit seemingly replaces a similar motion filed before the June annual meeting that was later withdrawn.A slate of Rainy Day nominees were elected to the board and that resulted in the resignation of CEO Joel Silver, but two of those directors also later resigned.Segal has pledged that the chain of tea shops will become profitable within a year and focus on its Canadian roots.

Letter to the editor: As a basketball player at Ohio State, I am both proud and honored that our university follows our sport the way they do. It is a privilege to play for Ohio State, to be a part of winning the Big Ten Tournament this year, and to have made it to the Elite Eight. I know that athletes in other sports that do not get much press coverage are also winning championships. Just two weekends ago, Logan Stieber won his second-consecutive national championship in his weight class in wrestling, and senior Marco Canevari marked the Scarlet and Gray’s single individual champion title in fencing by securing the gold medal in men’s epee on March 22. A day later, gymnasts Sarah Miller and Aly Marohn captured the Big Ten championship on the balance beam. Last Tuesday, The Lantern featured an article in which athletic director Gene Smith talked about how Ohio State isn’t just a football school. He talked about the success of our basketball team. It would be good to remember that in the other sports, there is a lot of success too. All athletes at Ohio State work very hard at being the best they can be at their sport. I wish that all athletes could receive the attention that our football and basketball teams get. They all deserve to be celebrated. Deshaun Thomas Third-year in sports management [email protected]
