It was always going to be interesting: six of Oxford’s finest young playwrights paired with six directors, randomly assigned to a group of actors and then given twenty-four hours to produce an original piece of theatre, all in the name of charity. The results were varied, both in content and quality. The majority clearly fell vitctim to a conflict between the grandiose ideas of the playwrights and the time constraints imposed by the exercise. The Gingerbread House in particular, while to be commended for its artistic vision, was dull and practically incomprehensible, and surprised everyone by abruptly finishing within ten minutes.The two most enjoyable plays, Alex Christofi’s The Reception and Cathy Thomas’ Who Needs Jesuits? kept it simple. The former centered around three slightly-inebriated bachelors slumped in a forgotten corner at a wedding reception, while Thomas’ delightfully irreverent production began as a stereotypical family breakfast that soon degenerated into bedlam. Both managed to be funny without seeming contrived and featured some excellent one-liners – but the highlight had to be an enthusiastic dance from Jack Farchy wearing nothing but a polka-dot mini dress. Also deserving special mention was Tom Campion’s touching play about the relationship between two cantankerous old men, roles which were played to perfection by Jonny Totman and Peter Clapp. And, as one would expect from any self-respecting playwright hailing from Wadham, there was of course a gratuitous and completely unnecessary reference to Nelson Mandela.While, conceptually, the idea of the 24 Hour Plays pulled all the right strings, in that it tested the creative skill of the playwrights and the initiative of the actors, the productions were, by and large, over-complex and over-ambitious, and as a result unpolished and unclear. In many of the plays the audience was left confused and frustrated, and dare I say it, wishing they had spent the last two hours watching re-runs of The OC. Ultimately, in a production with such unique time constraints as this, simplicity would have been preferable as opposed to trying to make artistic statements at the expense of coherence and clarity.Sarah DaviesDir. The present procedure for measuring the hotness of chillies in the food industry, using subjective taste testers, is considered far less reliable. Oxford University scientists have devised a new way of measuring the hotness of chillies. The process, which works by measuring the level of capsaicinoids (the source of the chilli’s hotness) in the chilli sauce, is called Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (ASV). This new method can precisely determine the level of hotness more speedily and cheaply than ever before.
“We could literally go to the same places that they’d sourced the products giving us the prices, everything we needed to know, so it made it very straightforward for us to then go out and make their flavour as they wanted it to appear.”Hayato Maedo, OxPrentice director, commented, “I’m delighted with the event. We managed to hold a really cool event, the companies were pleased with the outcome, the feedback from the participants was (I think) the best we’ve ever had (averaging in the region of 9 out of 10) and what’s more, one of the winning teams managed to get onto BBC Oxford radio to talk about their flavour.”Corcoran added, “We were very impressed with the quality of the flavour ideas they came up with and they were quite diverse. Both of the two finalists flavours were fantastic and we promised that we would repeat the winning flavour throughout the course of the year anyway but in actual fact I would be very keen to produce both of the flavours and they will probably be a flavour on and off throughout the year and probably for a few years to come as well.”Other entrants included Super G, an energy ice cream which was targeted at sports teams and gym enthusiasts, and Banoffee Crunch and Nostalgic Nana, an ice cream based on the banana flavoured sweets from the 1980s.The panel of experts was made up of managers from G&D’s, the marketing firm Purple Frog, and a marketing representative from Nestle.Jordan Poulton, President of the Oxford Entrepreneurs, explained the motivation behindthe competition, “We want to help people learn business skills by testing themselves in a risk-free environment. They don’t have to invest any money, only some time, and they get the chance to prove their abilities in real life entrepreneurial scenarios. We have a number of events lined up for the year, and we also have an iPhone App under development at the moment from the previous OxPrentice challenge.” Enterprising students have been putting their skills to the test in an ice cream selling competition.As part of the Oxford Entrepreneurs’ “OxPrentice” series, competitors in the G&D’s Challenge were asked to come up with a flavour of ice cream and pitch it to a panel of experts. At the end of 6th week, the best two flavours were made, and the ice cream that sold the most was declared the winner.The two teams went head to head with flavours “Jaffaholic”, made of jaffa cake chunks soaked in cointreau, and a festive ice cream which contained chunks of gingerbread and white chocolate.Thirteen tubs of each ice cream were produced and distributed to the three G&D’s shops around Oxford. The ice cream went on sale at noon on Friday of 6th, and the winner was the flavour which sold out first, or which had sold the most by midnight on Monday. Both teams were given a budget of £200 for ingredients and £100 for marketing.The winning flavour was Jaffaholic, which triumphed by a margin of just half a tub.Ushma Soneji, Hertford College, from the Jaffaholic team said, “We came up with the idea because we wanted something that hadn’t been done before, but would work well with the other flavours available at G&D’s so it could realistically become a long term regular flavour.”Suzanne Winder, a Hertford graduate, and also on the winning team said, “We had the brainstorming on Wednesday when the idea was chosen, the ice cream was made on Thursday while we got our strategy together (fitted around work), it went on sale Friday lunchtime and I spent most of Friday, Saturday and Sunday entirely focussed on telling everyone about my flavour and letting them taste it. We weren’t really warned about how quick the challenge would be, we just had to get on with it.”Tom Corcoran, manager of the St. Aldate’s G&D’s, said, “One of the things we were looking for in the competition was that they had to be able to source local ingredients. It was partly because that’s what we prefer to do wherever possible, but also it ensures for us that if the competition was running on Wednesday, as it was, we could guarantee that we could have the ice cream on sale on Friday.
Two Oxford graduate students solved a so-called “impossible” puzzle – while enjoying their dinner at a popular Oxford eatery.Freshly refurbished Japanese chain-restaurant Wagamama challenged customers to solve a complicated cipher written on its window, in honour of Albert Einstein’s birthday last month.Oxford students Klaudia Krawiecka and Vojtech Havlicek solved it in one night over some teriyaki chicken.The puzzle required the students to decode a sequence of numbers into letters of the alphabet, then into three words related to Wagamama.Krawiecka, a first-year graduate studying cybersecurity at Keble, told the Oxford Mail: “We were having dinner at Wagamama when we found out about the competition.“We had some spare time while waiting for the food and decided to give it a shot as we both enjoy solving puzzles.”Kraweicka and Havlicek, who is pursuing a DPhil in quantum computing at Keble, were undaunted, with Havlicek saying that solving puzzles is the pair’s “daily bread.”“We solve riddles on a daily basis in both personal and professional lives.”First, they employed frequency analysis, an information security technique involving analyzing how often certain letters or numbers crop up in a cipher.Krawiecka told Cherwell they “initially assumed that the most popular numbers in the sequence would denote the most common letters in the English alphabet.”This led to a dead end, however, as the sequence was too short to apply the technique.However, they then decided to break down the numbers into their constituent prime numbers. After that move, they noticed that each of the numbers in the puzzle was made up of a distinct set of prime numbers, prompting them to translate them into binary.From there, they went to the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) table, a standardized table for encoding information, and checked which binary numbers corresponded to which letters.The puzzle’s answer was ‘Wagamama Ramen Teppanyaki’.Wagamama rewarded the pair’s efforts with a £500 voucher to its restaurants. Havlicek said: “We will be well fed for a while!”
The Oxford Homeless Project celebrated its fourth anniversary on Monday (November 11) at the Asian Cultural Centre in Cowley. Sabir founded the enterprise in 2015 after her experience serving dishes to the homeless during Ramadan. Sabir and and her friends gathered at Gloucester Green in the evening when breaking their daily fast, inviting homeless people from across the city to celebrate Iftar. Following this, Sabir was inspired to do even more to help those without a roof over their heads, and decided to gather a group of volunteers to create a long-term project. Since its formation, the project has served home-cooked meals to the homeless every two weeks. The project continues to be run by volunteers and has now amassed more than four thousand likes on its Facebook page. Discussing the future of homelessness activism in the city in a statement ahead of their anniversary, the project said: “Whilst we still feel worried about our friends we do however feel things will be better for our rough sleepers this year. We do feel Oxford City Council have made some exceptional progress in tackling and addressing homelessness in Oxford.” Sabir told Cherwell: “It’s always very humbling to know the city of Oxford has no shortage of care or compassion. Whilst such a service shouldn’t be needed we believe it’s important for our guests to know they’re not alone and the community does care.” The event was also attended by Lord Mayor of Oxford, Craig Simmons, as well as Labour and Cooperative politician Anneliese Dodds, who has served as the MPfor Oxford East since the 2017 election. Sabir added: “We are here not only to give rough sleepers a hot meal; anyone in need is welcome to a community style lunch. We want to ensure going forward that people always have a place they can eat and feel welcome.” The Muslim community project, led by Shabnam Sabir and Tayyaba Hameed, is dedicated to providing fortnightly meals for the homeless, as well as other necessities such as sleeping bags, clothing, tents, and haircuts. Food donated by the community is served every other Monday lunchtime at the Asian Cultural Centre. Over a hundred people attended the anniversary lunch, from families and residents to college and university students. Children from St. Francis Primary School helped to decorate tables and creating posters with messages of solidarity for the event, while a group of pupils gave a choir performance. Students from EMBS Community College also got involved, cooking, serving and setting up, with volunteers also sharing pizza round at the event.
