Museum closer to reality

first_imgAfter years of delays, the Children’s Museum of Los Angeles broke ground in October on its $43 million facility at Hansen Dam. When completed in 2007, the new museum will be the first major cultural institution in the San Fernando Valley, and California’s largest museum dedicated to children. But backers are most excited about the facility itself, a unique and modern building that will house cutting-edge exhibits. The designers’ mission is to offer children a fully interactive experience so they feel they actually run the museum. The groundbreaking marked a victory for museum organizers who closed the original downtown museum in 2000 and struggled to raise the money to begin construction. They’re still raising $16.5 million for the museum’s exhibits and staffing, plus $10 million for an endowment to fund operations and maintenance. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
