Following a report that a 13-year-old girl was allegedly wedded to an older man over the weekend, the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA) has said an investigation is expected to be launched.Director of the Childcare and Protection Agency Ann GreeneThis is according to Director of the Agency, Ann Greene, during an interview on Wednesday with Guyana Times. Greene stated that the CC&PA currently does not have enough information to conduct the investigation.“We (are) looking at it but we got to get more information to send the people out. We don’t have exactly where this place is or who these people are. I have it down on the list… I need more information on where we can find this child,” she explained.Greene noted that this is the first report coming out of the Corentyne, Berbice area after quite some time. According to her, such cases were more prevalent in years gone by but had decreased significantly due to sensitisation conducted by the department.“If they marry a 14-year-old (or), if a grown man sleeps with a 14-year-old, he will get (into) trouble when it is being investigated because it can’t happen. It shouldn’t happen (and) the laws state clearly on it,” she posited.Nevertheless, Greene assured that the childcare officers were informed of the case and are seeking to muster the requisite information.According to information reaching Guyana Times, the prevalence of underage girls on the Upper Corentyne being married has become a worrying issue. This publication was told that there were at least three such weddings over the weekend on the Corentyne. Many of those ceremonies were also reportedly conducted by religious leaders, for which residents have condemned. At Number 64 Village on Sunday, a 13-year-old girl was allegedly wed to a man in his twenties. When this publication visited the home, the teen’s mother said it was not a wedding but a Jhandi. However, a relative realising that the media was enquiring said it was a birthday celebration.Guyana Times understands that Police in B Division (Berbice) visited the home of the teenager on the eve of the wedding, after it was reported by public-spirited community members.Residents of the community confirmed that they were invited to a wedding and that the wedding ceremony was performed. A Pandit from the community told this publication that the family had first went to him to perform the ceremony, but he refused when he learnt the child’s age.Meanwhile, also on the Corentyne, a 19-year-old on Sunday admitted to this newspaper that he has been living with a 13-year-old girl. When the girl went missing on April 29, it was reported to the Number 51 Police Station by her family.“We look several places and we did not find her. Two days after she called and said she was safe and we called back the Number 51 Station and told them,” an aunt of the girl said, while noting that the Police told them that once the girl said she was safe, “it is okay”.The teenager’s aunt added that they later learnt that the 13-year-old was living with a 19-year-old man in a neighbouring village.According to the teenager’s family, the Police did not seem interested in perusing the matter when they informed them.

A year later, Kentucky was not good enough to defend its national championship, which made fans in Louisville doubly ecstatic. You see, the teams are bitter rivals, and the Wildcats were left out of the NCAA Tournament field. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are the overall No. 1 seed, playing in the Midwest Region, which competes in, of all places, Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky, home of the NIT-bound Kentucky. The Cardinals will face either Liberty or North Carolina State in a second-round game Thursday. Kentucky plays an NIT game Tuesday — on the road because Rupp is taken for the NCAAs — at Robert Morris. The selection committee had tough decisions after five teams swapped the top ranking in The Associated Press poll, capped by West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga (30-2) moving to the lead spot for the first time in school history. Bobinski said six teams were in the running for No. 1 seeds on the final weekend, the result of a season in which no school established itself as a clear-cut favorite. In the end the four were filled by Louisville, Gonzaga, Kansas and Indiana. Cases for No. 1 were made by Georgetown and Duke, too, both of whom are No. 2 seedss. The Cardinals have ripped off 10 straight wins since a three-game slide, capped by a stunning turnaround in the championship game of the Big East tournament. They trailed Syracuse by 16 points early in the second half, but put on the full-court pressure and won in a romp, 78-61.The Big East, in its final year before the basketball-only schools break away to form their own league, led the way with eight teams in the NCAA field.“We are ecstatic to be the No. 1 seed, particularly after finishing off one of the greatest conferences in the history of college basketball with a Big East championship,” Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. “Our players showed incredible grit to come back from 16 points down. We know we will be challenged right away in one of the toughest brackets that I’ve seen in quite some time. I think our guys are up for the challenge.”No. 7 Kansas (29-5) moved up to take the second overall seed after an impressive run through the Big 12 tournament, punctuated by a 70-54 victory over rival Kansas State in the title game. No. 3 Indiana (28-6) is third overall despite falling to Wisconsin in the Big Ten semifinals. The Zags claimed the last of the coveted No. 1 seeds, edging out Atlantic Coast Conference champion Miami. The top spots are significant in at least one respect: A No. 1 has never lost to a 16th-seeded team. . . Let the madness begin.
RIDGEFIELD — Columbia River Economic Development Council’s first Main Street Day was designed for economic leaders around Clark County to learn about what’s going on in each city, but Ridgefield Mayor Don Stose had his sights set a little farther north than Clark County.“Stand back and watch us grow,” Stose said. “We are going to the moon.”Stose told the crowd of 40-plus at Overlook Park on Friday that Ridgefield was once again named the fastest-growing city in the state. He spoke about the work of Ridgefield Main Street in helping the city’s economic vitality, and nearly jumped in excitement while reading a proclamation declaring July 13 as Main Street Day in Ridgefield.Stose was so excited talking about the future of the city, he forgot to bring up the Ridgefield Outdoor Sports Complex, which is scheduled to open this fall and was recently announced as the homesite for a summer collegiate baseball team.“People from all over the county will be coming to Ridgefield to enjoy some of the top collegiate players in the country,” he said after his presentation. “It’s going to bring Clark County together.”While Stose was talking about the baseball team, bringing the county together was also the general idea behind CREDC’s Main Street Day, which started in Vancouver and included stops in Ridgefield, La Center, Battle Ground, Camas and Washougal. The group toured the main streets (though in Ridgefield, it’s North Main Avenue) and downtowns of each city, learning about the unique characteristics and amenities of each, as well struggles each community is facing.

Dear Editor,I write to support the re-election of Kevin Caira and Greg Bendel. Both have maintained the values of the Wilmington voter: integrity, professionalism, and accountability. I have lived in Wilmington since 1969 and have always been proud of its leadership. And I remember living on an unaccepted street and the difficulties that come with that. If there is a fix for that, I would like to hear what the fix is and what is the cost and who is responsible for that cost. There was a difficult time 15 or 20 years or so. It seemed at the time that being “pugnatious” and cute about a serious issue was a winner. The best insult you can fly publicly, name calling, was thought to be a winning strategy. I am grateful for the peace that has come to Wilmington after that time.Best wishes to Mr. Caira and Mr. Bendel.Sincerely,Ann L. YurekLike Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Insta360 If you’re a professional videographer looking for the best VR camera on the market, Insta360’s massive Titan could be just the thing. Sporting eight Micro Four Thirds sensors capable of taking up to 11K video resolution at 30 frames per second, the Titan is about the size of a basketball, and probably has the largest sensors of a VR camera in the market right now. Insta360 announced it Monday at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. Besides shooting video at 11K, the Titan can handle 10K resolution in 3D, or 11K 360-degree photos in both normal and 3D types. You can record 8K resolution in 60 fps and 5.3K at 120 fps. The Titan can also shoot 10-bit HDR video. Other features include Insta360’s software features, such as FlowState Stabilization, which lets you create stabilized videos without the need for gimbals. It will also have Farsight, a live monitoring system that lets you use a tablet or phone to preview the shoot. The Titan will likely ship in April, with Insta360 planning to do a pilot program with select filmmakers before that happens. It will cost a whopping $15,000, which converts to about £11,800 or AU$21,0000. By The Associated PressCory Booker is not being subtle. The Iowa caucuses are well over a year away, but the New Jersey senator is working overtime to make an impression in Iowa and in other states that will be crucial to winning the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., is working overtime to make an impression in Iowa and in other states crucial to the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)Booker has secured the keynote speaker role at the marquee fall Democratic Party fundraising banquet in Des Moines on Oct. 6. He’ll also headline a Democratic fundraiser later in October in South Carolina, which holds the first primary in the South and is a key test of support among Black voters.Adding to the intrigue surrounding Booker is his budding relationship with Des Moines lawyer Jerry Crawford, a party powerbroker helping the senator make connections in Iowa. After Crawford attended a dinner with Booker in the Washington area last spring, he arranged meetings in Newark for him with influential Iowa Democrats, including state House Minority Leader Mark Smith. The moves are a notable break from the approach of other well-known Democrats considering 2020 campaigns. While many potentially top-tier prospects have fostered relationships in Iowa, Booker is the only one — for now — to be in the state ahead of the November midterm elections. The strategy is risky but gives Booker the opportunity to introduce himself to Iowa voters before other high-wattage candidates show up later this year or in early 2019. That, according to some Iowa political operators, could prove helpful.“I’m aware of Sen. Booker,” said Nathan Thompson, a Democratic chairman in Winneshiek County. “He definitely seems like he has presidential ambitions. But I’m not real familiar with him, beyond being the former mayor of Newark.”A spokesman for Booker, Jeff Giertz, insists the senator has not decided to run for president and is focused purely on the midterms.Booker has campaigned for Democrats in 20 states “with one purpose in mind: to support great Democratic candidates who will be a check and balance to President Trump,” Giertz said.Still, Booker is working to build his profile with a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show” and a sprawling profile in New York magazine last week in which he said it would be “irresponsible” for him not to consider a presidential bid.But nothing has put Booker on the political map quite like his actions during Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He made public some documents the panel had kept secret, risking potential expulsion from the Senate.“This is about the closest I’ll probably ever have in my life to an ‘I am Spartacus moment,’” he said.If Kavanaugh returns to the Judiciary Committee this week to address a woman’s allegation that he sexually assaulted her in the 1980s when they were teenagers, one of two sexual-misconduct allegations Kavanaugh is denying as they roil his court nomination, Booker will almost certainly have another starring role. While such performances cause some observers in Washington to view Booker as overly theatrical, he’s so far used it to create a buzz in Iowa, said former state Democratic Chairwoman Sue Dvorsky.“It’s a good event for Booker to make his move,” Dvorsky said.Dvorsky recalled the winning impression Booker left when he spoke to Iowa’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, before the 2012 election.“He had them eating out of his hand,” she recalled. But commanding a ballroom of influential state party leaders is different from grasping the concerns at a cafe table in rural Iowa, where Barack Obama connected during his winning 2008 Iowa caucus campaign. That leaves some Democratic strategists uncertain about Booker’s prospects.“Soaring oratory that can inspire is a very different skill set from the natural ability to connect with voters of all political stripes,” said Jim Messina, Obama’s 2012 campaign manager. As a young, Black senator with a background in urban politics and known for his oratory, Booker inevitably draws comparisons to Obama, whose win in the 2008 Iowa caucuses propelled him to the Democratic nomination that year. But Iowa political strategists say it’s premature to expect a repeat of Obama’s explosive rise, ignited by his speech to the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston as a little-known Illinois senator.“It would be hard to top the moment Barack Obama seized at the 2004 convention,” said John Norris, a veteran Democratic Iowa caucus operative who advised Obama’s 2008 campaign.Sandy Cronbaugh of rural eastern Iowa, who supported Obama in 2008, recalled him “listening to what we were saying about problems with rural health care.”“I haven’t read up on Cory Booker yet,” Cronbaugh said. “I would need to know more about him.”
